I am watching this Japanese drama called REBOUND?

Can you tell me why the guy doesn't recognize the girl in person but when they are on the phone he does it makes no sense the extras 100 or so pounds she gained shouldn't change the fact that he should at least recognize her voice when they talk on person if he can recognize it on the phone IMHO
